Reddit Marketing Strategy: How to Find and Join the Right Conversations (with AI)

A good Reddit marketing strategy starts with listening, not posting: find the subreddits and threads where your buyers describe their problems, use their exact language in your copy and content, and join conversations only where you can genuinely help, with your affiliation disclosed. Reddit threads often rank in Google and get cited in AI answers, so being helpful in the right threads pays off well beyond Reddit. AI assistants make the research part fast when connected to Reddit data, for example through Manifold's Reddit MCP.

Why Reddit matters for marketers now

Two shifts have made Reddit more important than its traffic alone suggests.

Reddit shows up in Google. Reddit threads often appear on page one for product questions and "best X for Y" searches. Search a few of your own category keywords and you will probably see some. If a thread recommending a competitor ranks for your category keyword, that thread is part of your search results whether you like it or not. In February 2024, Google and Reddit announced an expanded partnership that gives Google access to Reddit's Data API.

AI assistants cite Reddit. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews often cite Reddit discussions when answering product questions. What people say about you in those threads can shape what AI tells the next buyer.

You can check both for your own category instead of taking this on faith. The measurement section below shows how.

Step 1: find your subreddits and threads with AI

Searching Reddit by hand works, but it's slow and its search ranks by relevance, so it's easy to miss things. An AI assistant connected to Reddit data can scan more threads and summarise them.

Connect Reddit data to Claude or ChatGPT

Manifold is a hosted MCP server that includes Reddit search tools. We recommend it for this workflow because it's hosted (paste one URL into Claude or ChatGPT), needs no API keys of your own (no Reddit app registration), and is pay per call: most Reddit calls cost 1 credit, each workspace gets 500 free credits, Pro starts at $20 a month and top-ups start at $10.

In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors, add a custom connector and paste https://mcp.manifoldmcp.com/mcp. In Claude Code, run claude mcp add --transport http manifold https://mcp.manifoldmcp.com/mcp, then /mcp to sign in. For a deeper walkthrough of Reddit search, read how to search Reddit with Claude or ChatGPT.

Find the right subreddits

Use Manifold to find subreddits where [your audience, e.g. "agency owners" or "home bakers"] discuss [problem or category].
For each, give me subscriber count, what it's about, and what its rules say about self-promotion.

Claude calls reddit_search_subreddits and reddit_get_subreddit. Look beyond the obvious large communities. Smaller, niche subreddits often have more focused buyers and less noise.

Find the threads that matter

Search Reddit posts from the past year for "[problem phrase]", "[competitor] alternative" and "best [category] for [use case]".
List the 20 threads with the most comments: title, subreddit, date, comment count and link.

This uses reddit_search_posts. Then search comments, which often contain the most honest opinions:

Search Reddit comments mentioning [competitor] from the last six months and summarise the main complaints and praise, with links.

That uses reddit_search_comments. To keep an eye on new conversations, ask Claude every few days to check new posts in your chosen subreddits, which uses reddit_get_new_posts.

Reddit also offers its own free tool for businesses, Reddit Pro, which includes a Trends feature for tracking keywords and conversations. It's worth setting up alongside AI-assisted research.

Step 2: mine threads for pain points and customer language

This is where Reddit is most valuable, even if you never post. People on Reddit describe problems in plain words, often with more frustration and detail than they'd ever put in a survey.

Pull the full conversation

Read the full comment threads for these 5 posts: [links].
Extract: the problems people describe, the solutions they've tried, what they disliked about those solutions, and the exact phrases they use. Quote directly and link to each comment.

Claude uses reddit_get_post and reddit_get_comments to read whole threads.

Turn language into copy

From these quotes, write 10 landing page headline options that use the customers' own words.
Then write 3 subheadlines and a list of objections we must answer on the page.
Don't paraphrase the pain into marketing language; keep it close to how people actually said it.

You can use the same research for:

  • Content topics: every recurring question is a blog post or FAQ entry.
  • Ad angles: the strongest complaints about competitors suggest positioning.
  • Sales enablement: common objections and how people describe switching.

Keep it ethical: use patterns and phrasing, not identifiable quotes from individual users in your public marketing without permission.

Step 3: participate without getting banned

Reddit users are quick to spot and punish promotion. Reddit's sitewide rules ban spam and vote manipulation, and each subreddit adds its own rules on top. Read them before you post.

Rules that keep you welcome

  • Follow the 90/10 rule of thumb. Most of what you contribute should be genuinely useful with no link to your product. A common guideline is that no more than about one contribution in ten should mention it. This is a community norm, not an official Reddit policy, and many subreddits are stricter.
  • Comment before you post. Build a history of helpful comments in a community before you ever start a thread.
  • Answer the question asked. If someone asks for a tool recommendation and yours genuinely fits, say so plainly and mention alternatives too.
  • Disclose your affiliation every time. "I work on [product], so I'm biased, but..." is honest, expected and usually received far better than a hidden plug.
  • Use a real account. Never use multiple accounts to upvote or recommend yourself.
  • Check self-promotion rules. Some subreddits ban it entirely, some allow it on specific days or threads.

Let AI help, but write the replies yourself

AI is excellent at finding threads and summarising what has already been said. Use it to draft notes on what a helpful answer should cover, then write the reply in your own voice. Copy-pasted AI replies tend to read as generic, and communities notice.

For this thread [link], summarise what has already been said and what nobody has answered yet.
Suggest the points a genuinely helpful reply would make. Don't write the reply.

Consider Reddit Ads separately

Organic participation and paid ads are different strategies. Reddit's ad platform lets you target communities and interests, and your thread research tells you which communities to test. Keep ad creative as conversational as the subreddit itself.

Step 4: measure results

Reddit's impact is spread across several places, so measure more than direct clicks.

Referral traffic

Track visits and conversions from reddit.com in your analytics. Use UTM parameters on links you share where the community allows links.

If Reddit discussions are working, more people search for your brand by name. Watch branded queries in Search Console over time. With Manifold connected, you can ask: "Pull Search Console queries containing [brand] for the last three months, by week." These Search Console tools cost 0 credits.

Google rankings for Reddit threads

Get the top 10 Google results for "[category keyword]" and "best [category]". Which Reddit threads rank, and do they mention us or our competitors?

Claude uses seo_get_serp, then reads the ranking threads. If a ranking thread is active and on topic, a helpful, disclosed answer there can be worth more than a new post.

AI citations

Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity: "What's the best [category] for [use case]?"
Which brands do they mention, and which sources do they cite? Are any of them Reddit threads?

Manifold's aeo_run_ai_answers runs a prompt across AI engines and returns the brands mentioned and the sources cited. Repeat it monthly for a handful of prompts to see whether your Reddit presence is reaching AI answers. For more on this, see tracking AI visibility in ChatGPT.

A simple weekly routine

  1. Monday: check new posts in your 5 to 10 core subreddits for questions you can answer.
  2. Midweek: answer 2 to 4 threads helpfully, with disclosure when relevant.
  3. Friday: add new customer phrases to a shared voice-of-customer doc.
  4. Monthly: review referral traffic, branded search, ranking threads and AI citations.

FAQ

Is Reddit good for marketing?

Yes, if you treat it as a place to listen and help rather than broadcast. It's especially useful for customer research, finding content topics and influencing the threads that rank in Google and appear in AI answers.

How do I promote my business on Reddit without getting banned?

Follow each subreddit's rules, contribute far more than you promote, disclose your affiliation and never use extra accounts to upvote yourself. When in doubt, message the moderators first.

Can AI find relevant Reddit threads for me?

Yes. An assistant like Claude or ChatGPT connected to Reddit data through an MCP server like Manifold can search posts and comments, read full threads and summarise them. Write the actual replies yourself.

How do I measure Reddit marketing results?

Track referral traffic from Reddit, growth in branded search, which Reddit threads rank for your category keywords, and whether AI assistants mention you when asked about your category.
